From the recording Hybrid - LP6

This song is part spoken, and then leads into a 7/4 track. The situation is clear - they have gone, and it hits you so hard that you cannot sleep. As your tiredness builds it becomes overwhelming and you begin to have flashing images in your mind as you lie there in the darkness. You have tried counting sheep, but it doesn't work - especially as the sheepdogs drive them over the nearest cliff and they come back and sleep themselves. At the end in your tiredness you are like a computer that has got stuck - you can't properly switch off or on again. And at the end "not enough memory" is the sign that your system has become completely overloaded. Confusion, disorientation, dysfunctional. Reboot, rewind....

Lyrics

SPOKEN
Today has been even longer than yesterday
The rain has stopped. The sun sets, bursting into colour, then fading
But no shepherds’ delight on the second day
Haven’t slept since you left.
I can’t shut down, or stop thinking.

Feels like I can see things that are no longer there.
The place where you so often sat is in shadow.
The fading light, deceptive, sometimes tricks.
Your silhouette appears.
But you’ve gone, and nothing seems to matter any more

Your photo in a frame reflected in the dying embers of the sun
A reminder of how you filled this house with life, energy and sound
It’s so quiet here without you.
Every small noise amplified, and never noticed before
Will it get easier?
This is only the beginning.
How will it end?
I’m so tired

SUNG
So tired. Close your heavy eyes
You can't sleep. Time goes so slow.
Clear your mind. Erase, reset, rewind
Images flashing. Memory full.
Flooding, streaming. River in your brain.
Loop never ending. Erase the day.
Sounds so easy. So much noise
Break the cycle. Counting sheep.
One becomes two. Then multiply.
Different colours. Getting louder.
Dogs barking. Moving together.
Reach the cliff. The first go over.
Line gets shorter. It gets quieter.
Then they’re all gone. Silence is loud
Dogs lie down. Fall into contented sleep.
As dawn breaks. How can I find peace?

How can I find peace?
There is no peace.
So tired.
Close your heavy eyes
You can’t sleep
Press start, switch on
Just a warning light
Power on standby
Did I do it right?
It’s too late
System not recognized
I’ve tried it all
Recharge, reboot, install
But the message I see
“Not enough memory”
