From the recording Ionian EP3
1925. The village is the same as it has been for a long time, but change is coming - new technologies, roads, communications and the impact of World War 1 affects the island too. There is not much money available, and the young men are forced to leave and get work in shipping and move abroad. Tourism is not really much more than a few wealthy visitors who come to see the island, and some royalty who have embraced its charms - especially a German emperor who gave his name to the viewpoint at the top of the village where the sunsets are amazing.
Lyrics
Summer 1925
Fishermen cast off
At dawn
Emerald green waters
Return the catch
Village is waiting
Women in black
Sit on the front porch.
Chatter fills the street
Change is coming
Feel it in the air
Won’t stay like this
Does anybody care?
Sounds of summer
Clicking cicadas
Goats with bells
Dogs barking
Cats sleeping
A normal day
Summer heat
The priest walks slowly
Old men in the cafe
Coffee, ouzo, backgammon
The noise of the game
On wooden boards
Talk of times gone by
The war, the young men gone
What has changed
What will stay the same
Change is coming
Feel it in the air
Won’t stay like this
Does anybody care?
Stays the same
Not disturbed
All year round
Far away from the modern world
Quiet
Peaceful
Safe
