  1. Burnout

From the recording ALTER EGOS LP4

The gong at the beginning represents inner calm - something missing from someone with burnout. In the song there is mention of time and there is a strong connection between time and stress. The beat in the song is a bit like a clock. The song is intended to be optimistic - to recognise the symptoms and problem is the first step, and then to believe in yourself is a way forwards. But it is not an easy journey, and the warm fireside in the middle of the song is a temporary respite.

Lyrics

Time flies - a relative conception
When circumstance defines the perception
Minutes feel like hours, hours like days
Days feel like forever. Morph into yesterdays
The second hand ticks like a ticks like a siren
It’s taking too long (spoken)

Burnout. Start of the breakdown
I don’t understand. You’ve changed
Disappeared. I can’t reach you
Lost in the desert of your soul

You don’t sleep. You don’t eat
Once so full of life. Carefree and open
Shadow of yourself. Unsure about everything
Stay afloat in a stormy sea
Sinking. Too much responsibility
Tormented by conflict (spoken)

Sitting alone in the twilight
Embers of the fire light the room
The clock on the wall loudly ticking
Shadows dancing in the gloom
Until time stands still (spoken)

Come back - gotta be more than this
You’ve had your fingers burned. Take the risk
Fill the glass. Let it run over
Metaphorical four leaf clover
You can do anything you want to
Believe. You can do anything (spoken)

Burnout. Start of the breakdown
I don’t understand. You’ve changed
Disappeared. I can’t reach you
Lost in the desert of your soul
Lost in the desert of your soul
Lost in the desert of your soul
